Language

English

This subject focuses on four key areas of the language development namely;

  • Listening (and understanding what has been spoken),
  • Speaking (as a form of communication),
  • Reading (with understanding and enjoyment)
  • Writing (to communicate ideas and information)

Basic skills in writing and reading are developed using sandpaper letters, alphabet cut-outs, and various presentations allowing children to link sounds and letter symbols effortlessly and to express their thoughts through writing. The curriculum also covers the study of grammar, creative dramatics, and children’s literature which further boost the child’s love for the language.

Chinese

The learning approach is similar to that of the English language. To successfully engage the children, Chinese lessons are conducted through song and dance, dramatization and poetry recitation.

Mathematics

Mathematics is a subject many of our children love. We pride ourselves in teaching the subject in a fun and meaningful way that enables them to use numbers in daily experiences. The lessons include number recognition, counting, basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, squares and cubes as well as fundamental concepts such as sorting, matching and patterning. This is successfully achieved through the use of authentic Montessori materials, that were designed to capture the interest of the learning child.

Science

Science lessons are always fun-filled and engaging as children are given opportunities to find out why things happen and how things work through simple investigations and conducting hands-on experiments. The lessons include classification of objects, learning about the parts of different living things, lifecycles of organisms, the human body, the solar system and many more that could possibly interest them.

culture littlesprouts

Cultural

Cultural activities expose the child to basics in geography, history, and life sciences. Above all, we want our children to develop a positive attitude towards the world around them.

Art

Art comes in many forms and ideas. Art nurtures inventiveness as it engages our children in a process that aids in the development of self-esteem, cooperation and self-discipline. In order to help our children develop an interest in the subject, they are first exposed to the wonders of colours using various medias and subsequently taught the elements of art to make connections through drawings.

Music and Movement

Music and Movement is an integrated part of daily curriculum. It is a “must-have” during circle-time, tuning-in and closure of every lesson. The children learn best through songs and movements as they get to express their ideas and feelings without them knowing.

Practical Life

Practical Life area is where the child works on activities that help with fine motor skills. Strong fine motor skills are essential to complete tasks such as writing, cutting, using a fork or spoon, threading beads, moving puzzle pieces, zipping, buttoning, and tying shoe laces. The wide range of activities for fine motor skills development that we have incorporated also provides a fun learning environment for kids to experiment and exercise their small muscles. Also included are independence-building activities like care of self, care of the environment, exercises of grace and courtesy, and coordination of physical movement.

Sensorial

Maria Montessori believed that nothing comes into the mind except through the senses.

Sensorial area enables the child to order, classify, and describe sensory impressions in relation to length, width, temperature, mass, color, pitch, etc. The materials used are specifically designed to help the child develop discrimination, order, and to broaden and refine the senses. Visual discrimination of difference in dimension, width, length, and size can be found in materials such as the Pink Tower, Brown Stair, Red Rods, and Knobbed Cylinders. The Touch-Tablets, and Fabric-Feel isolate the tactile sense, while Sound Cylinders and Bells train the auditory sense. The Mystery Bag helps to develop the stereognostic sense (the tactile-muscular sense).

After experiencing Sensorial activities, the child’s sense perceptions will appear inherently structured and capable of comprehending abstract concepts. The experiences also help prepare him to be a logical, aware, and perceptive person.
